Nutrition trends in 2008

As the year comes to an end, i reflect on the nutrition trends that made news - some within India and some outside.

The most significant one for Indians that hit the headlines was the change in BMI ranges, which redefined obesity. It might not have gone down well with many individuals who thought they were overweight and were suddenly thrust into the obese category. Weight loss programs and packages continued to announce themselves thru advertisements.

Low-carb diets were trashed by the West and diets began to move back towards low-fat / low calorie with a regular carb and protein intake. Vegetables, fruits, spices and beverages made news with their health-protective abilities. Nuts and dark chocolates were probably the most-talked about foods as contributors for good health. Eating "green" for a better environment and eating "local" and whole foods for better health, got a mention.

As we are about to enter 2009, let's work towards positive health thru better nutrition and wholesome diets. Good health is not about 'weight loss' only but is about complete wellness and well-being.

Here's wishing everyone "A Healthy, Fun-filled and Fabulous 2009".eat
