Probiotics - the new wave in nutrition

Probiotics are creating news in the media and amongst healthcare professionals. They have been incorporated into foods with claims on health enhancement and they are being prescribed as supplements by some doctors.

What are probiotics and why is there an increased interest in this?
Probiotics are dietary supplements of live bacteria or yeasts which are believed to be healthy, and are finding use in the West. Lactic acid bacteria, the most commonly used probiotic is sometimes added to food to enhance the value. In India, however, the use of curd has been in practice for centuries. Curd is a great source of lactic acid bacteria which benefits gut health.

Recent research has focused on potential anti-cancer benefits from probiotics. Travellers' diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance are some of the health problems that can be overcome with the help of probiotics. Ancient Indian wisdom has told us that curd or buttermilk (chhaas / lassi) helps to combat these minor health issues. Lactic acid bacteria also help to prevent gut infections.

Make sure to include at least 1 cup of curd or 2 glasses of buttermilk in your daily meal plan!
